People take pain relievers for everyday aches and acute pains. How do the different classes of pain relievers work?  This is a hugely important area of science we’re still learning a lot about.

Video Summary

Nociceptors are sensory neurons responsible for alerting the body to the presence of pain. Thanks to ibuprofen and aspirin, some of these neurons can be shut off, if you find yourself hurt. Unfortunately, they can’t be directed to the exact spot you need addressed. Sometimes, though, the best pain relievers are decisions you make. Researchers have found that how much pain you experience can have a lot to do with where your focus is and what kind of mood you’re in. On the other side of the spectrum, we know that having things like damaged cells can produce arachidonic acid. The more of this it creates, the easier it is to experience pain.
