The Earth’s heat can help us meet our energy needs, but how does the geothermal technology work? See three ways we use geothermal activity to power generators for renewable energy.
There are three main ways to generate clean geothermal energy. Dry steam power plants, flash steam power plants, and binary cycle power plants each use a different method of obtaining steam to turn a turbine, which generates electricity. These methods help minimize the environmental impact of our energy needs and create fewer by-products. The ability to reuse or sell some of these mineral byproducts, such as sulfur, helps lower the cost of geothermal energy even more. It’s estimated that geothermal power can provide up to 10% of America’s power needs.
