We all know the popular saying that elephants never forget. But what else do we know about them? Learn about the intelligence, empathy and artistry of elephants.
Elephant intelligence is remarkable. For one thing, elephants have an outstanding sense of memory. They commonly remember places, people, or animals after a long absence or separation. Their large brain and encephalization quotient, with their advanced hippocampus, gives elephants a mental development with striking similarities to our own. Empathy, artistry, and curiosity have been observed in elephants. But elephants also show a sense of justice, altruism, and language. These are realms that we normally reserve for ourselves, but it’s becoming increasingly clear that we share these traits with elephants.
