Combining an ammonia solution with copper carbonate yields a copper carbonate complex with a precipitate. The precipitate is discarded and the solution transferred to a new beaker. Remarkably, cotton wool completely dissolves in this solution to form viscose. Injecting sulfuric acid into the viscose will cause polymerization, and rayon is formed. The rayon will initially be blue but will turn colorless after several minutes in the solution.
